Holy Week in Mexico

Holy week in Mexico means two weeks off school for the young people. Many from Mexico City migrate to the city of Cuernavaca, the city of eternal spring, for vacation. The population of the city swells during this time.

Red lilies were growing along with green grass, vibrant red, lavendar, and deep purple bougainvillas which spilled over walls and grew in medians of the streets. Other delicate blue flowers grew with bird-of-paradise plants in hedges. It is a beautiful city. Where else can one buy two dozen red, long-stemmed roses or less than $4 - less than 40 pesos!

Mexicans celebrate Holy Week in a big way, and many from the capital of Mexico and other places go to Cuernavaca to relax. Street markets were crowded as vendors sold their wares. We only went to a market once because of the anticipated throngs of people. Also, since we have been to this city many times, we did not have to buy souvenirs like it was the only time we would be there, although I did finally buy a few little clay pots. In addition to the street market, Sam’s Club, Costco, Superama and Mega were all full as well as the new Mall and the Plaza.

We were there to share in this festive time honoring the resurrection of Jesus the Son of God from the dead. This miraculous event is the pivotal point in history and the cornerstone of the Christian faith. Because He lives, we shall live also. What a glorious truth! After sharing our testimonies, teaching and preaching during Holy Week, approximately 25 people trusted Christ as their personal Savior.

Authentic Mexican food is tasty, and we enjoyed it immensely. Rice and beans seems to be a staple in many countries and is no exception here. Breakfast, or desayuno, during the week consisted of Sincronizades, chiliquilies, scrambled eggs, tortillas, and donuts. Lunch, or almuerzo, was eaten around 2 p.m. and dinner was eaten after our last meeting about 8:30 p.m We went to Don Pollos on Easter Sunday for dinner as well as Vivaldi’s, VIPS, Portons and Potzolcalli Restaurant on other days. Squash blossom soup was served to us several times, and we found it to be very tasty.

What a wonderful week with friends engaging in using what talent we have to help others. We hope your Easter was a joyous one.
